As Logan and Caitlin were feeling like bits of their life would be threatened by Milo’s presence in our life, we decided it was essential to make sure their birthdays were spectacular (and so that meant we had to outsource cake making… I can’t even be guaranteed to make beans on toast, let alone bake a half decent cake right now). The cakes I see popping up on Fox Cub Photography’s cake smash shoots look so enticing and so I asked her who makes them and got directed this way, to As You Wish Cakes.
After I spoke to the children and found out what they were hoping for in terms of birthday cake, I then popped across to the Facebook page, had a search for something similar and then sent a message to the page.
Heidi was easy to approach in terms of setting up the cake requests, understanding and accommodating to my requests. The reservation was made quickly and deposit sent easily. Pickup arrangements were also flexible and straightforward. And even patiently dealt with my last minute panic about whether we’d be remembered as I booked quite ahead of time.
The pricing isn’t “cheap” by any means, but when you buy from a cake maker like this (as opposed to, say, a supermarket) you are paying for quality, fresh ingredients. For the cake to be full of flavour and moisture. For the outer decor to be lovingly hand crafted and made to specification. Ingredients aren’t cheap and hand crafting takes time. You are paying for someone to pay one to one attention to the detail you require. And for that I do not think what was paid was unreasonable. It was certainly more like what you’d expect to pay for a lower end wedding cake or something, and not something we’d do every birthday for the children but definitely worth it to us this year.
Birthday 1: Caitlin’s cakes

Caitlin is as obsessed as ever with Frozen and so wanted a Frozen themed cake. But as I wanted to make things as easy as possible so wanted cupcakes for the children so that I didn’t need to deal with cake cutting on site.
What we received did not disappoint. Caitlin literally cried happy tears when she saw the cakes. It was more than she could have imagined. Her guests were in awe when they saw it and everyone who had some of the cake or a cupcake praised how it tasted.

Birthday 2: Logan’s cakes

Logan’s obsessions are varied, but largely lego based. With Ninjago being very much at the forefront. He wanted Kai’s head as his cake. And what we received was right on the mark. Despite being a teenager we actually got a happy and enthusiastic reaction from him when he saw it. Again, As with Caitlin’s cakes the reactions were all positive.
